In the end Ireland grind Italy down to win by 23. Wasn't the most memorable game of rugby, Ireland scrappy enough but job done and on to next week. Couple of knock ons from Henshaw he'll be disappointed about but thought it was an assured performance overall from him. Keatley did the job required on the day at 10 but will welcome Sexton back for next week.

Hope Joe hasn't made his mind up on Marmion, just feel if he was thinking of including him in the RWC squad he'd have him on the bench for this match. But if Schmidt wouldn't use Boss during the RWC he wouldn't be any more likely to use Marmion except for bench duty against the likes of Canada and Romania. Perhaps Kieran will use this slight to pick his game up a notch or two. As bad as I feel for him, Ireland's loss is Connacht's gain provided Murray comes through the game uninjured.

Apart from my Keatley faux pas, my point still strands about Conan and Madigan, they were both awful on Friday.

The game completely passed Conan by, we saw nothing of the player he showed in his P{ro12 excursions for Leinster..
And Madigan's game management was absolutely awful (again), it had nothing to do with Marmion whose general play was fine. But he would have been helped by more effective performances by the players inside and outside him.

I'm delighted he'll be available for the Scarlet's game, but disgusted at the same time with Schmidt that he has reverted to Boss with a RWC less than a year away..There is absolutely nothing to be learned from Boss getting game time at the weekend, and barring catastrophic injuries to Reddan and Murray he wont get a minutes play at the RWC, (not because I don't think Boss hasn't anything to offer, just that Joe won't use him)....

In Joe we Trust!

I am confused by some of the calls but will will hopld out opinion until after the game. These players probably suit the game plan ( what ever that might be ) better.

Nothing wrong with Kieran's game in the context of the overall performance, Boss benefited form getting on when all the changes were being made and England a bit more disjointed...

Erm, Keatley not on Bench cause he starting.. Madigan played himself off the starting XV.. Few dodgy box kicks really made Marmions performance look worse than it was

In other news, how Jones on bench ahead of Earls or Fitz is a head scratcher.. Team not exactly short in the FB department

Madigan has suffered for the same reason. This is disappointing as Boss definitely isn't the future for Irish rugby at 9. Very difficult now to see Kieran make the RWC squad.

I think Kieran is as good as we think Ger. It's just that he never shows it when he gets a chance at representative level. A half decent performance last Friday night would've seen him on the bench in Rome. Instead a hesitant performance with not one trademark break has scuppered his short-term Ireland chances unfortunately.

Have to agree Mary. Since JS knows more about rugby than I do it has me wondering if we think that Marmion is not as good as we think.

In fairness to Boss he was much better than Marmion for the Wolfhounds.

No White either so hopefully we'll only be missing Robbie (and the injured players obviously) against Scarlets.

The very very good point is I can now ask you : which injured player would we really miss, except Aki and JHW?? We should have (fingers crossed nothing happens this afternoon) 20 out of the 23 best players against Scarlets....
