if i have learned anything of late from watching rugby, its, big guys win matches.
wales
phillips 6ft 3, 16st 5.
north, 6 ft 4, 17st 2
cuthbert 6ft 6, 16st 5
roberts 6ft 4, 17st 5
davies 6ft 1, 16st 5.

we all know what wales have done in the last few years.

england under 20's
england must of had the biggest squad at the jwc and they had one game plan, run straight for the line and knock over whoever is in your way. it worked, champions.
ireland had a shocking small squad, take a look at ireland players compared to france. ireland finished 8th.

roscrea college
anyone who had an eye on the leinster schools would of seen roscrea had the biggest pack by a country mile. they made the semi final, punching above there weight and very unlucky to lose that semi. there game plan was also simple, have scrums, win them and give the ball to SOB and the other forwards, its hard for smaller guys to stop the bigger, heavyier players.

next year id say we need to look at bigger players, ireland as a rugby nation dont have big players as were afraid to send young 15 year olds to the gym and make them lift weights.
Parks will more then likely retire and White will be IQ. that leaves us with 2 NIQ spots to bring in big stong powerful players. seems that leinster fancy toner now, if he came here, Lam should send him home for 2 weeks and make him eat, for a tall player, he isnt using his body right.

i was a BIG fan of Henry Fa'afili, didnt score many, but always took 2 or 3 players with him trying to bring him down, for the life of me, no other connacht player knew what his game plan was.
henry, 5ft 11, 16st 5
B murphy, 5ft 10, 14 stone
D mcsharry, 6ft 1 1/2, 15st 3.

On the plus side he kicked 5 from 7, scored a try, joined the line regularly, played 90 mins

On the minus side his 2 missed kicks were relatively straightforward and he still has that tash and a hairstyle from Kajagoogoo

Nothing "obvious" about it at all. He's played no rugby in the last two season's, is talented but seriously injury prone.

As I said earlier he'll be involved in training groups through the summer to give Lam an opportunity to establish whether he's worth giving a development contract to. I wouldn't believe for a minute that they think it's worth gambling a full contract on him getting more than half a season in this year. They'll keep him on development hoping he can get a full season of AIL/B&I Cup rugby behind him.

We've a full squad of second rows signed up already with Swifty, Muldowney, Clarke, Qualter & Kearney and Browner and George able to do a decent job there too..

This next season is a career defining one for Nolan who will be 25 next month...

Anyone see this article about this lad john Semple in New Zealand? If he gets into the Hawkes Bay team for the ITM championship he could be worth keeping an eye on.

Agree with the overall message of your post Borders Connacht still don't have a large squad and certainly not a lot of depth but its moving in the right direction. I don't agree with your position on Duffy and Lam though I can't see him giving the full back position to a new signing straight off the bat, especially as he was signed as a utility back. Duffy was captain last year and Lam will respect that, plus when he came back from injury he was playing some super rugby imo on the wing; there's still a starting place for Duffy in this team if he shows he wants it which I think he has last season.

I know I've been harping on about it for a while but I think we'll see more rotation next season, duffy henshaw toh and so'oialo could all be in contention for the full back jersey for instance but could also be moved between fb and wing, fb and centre etc depending on needs and gameplan. Likewise there are a few inexperienced second rows and while starting a game with qualter and dillane together could be a disaster hopefully we can see them matched with an experienced counterpart in swifty, muldowney or clarke, or coming off the bench to replace browne or kearney at some point, or vice versa.

So the overall point is while the squad hasn't grown substantially there are a number of options that have been opened up for next season both through the growing academy and the new signings and that's very exciting to see.

Clarke will be fine, even if Chiefs make the final again this year. He should be finished the first week of August. There's a big gap between the NPC and Super Rugby (about four months), so he won't exactly be running on empty....

Props: Brett Wilkinson, Ronan Loughney, Denis Buckley, Rodney Ah You (special project), Nathan White (special project), JP Cooney. Hookers: Jason Harris-Wright, Dave Heffernan, Sean Henry, James Rael. Second Row: Craig Clarke (NIQ), Mick Kearney, Aly Muldowney, Michael Swift, Danny Qualter. Back Rowers: Andrew Browne, Aaron Conneely, Mata Fafita, Jake Heenan (special project), Willie Faloon, Eoin McKeon, John Muldoon, George Naoupu (NIQ). Scrum-halves: Kieran Marmion, Frank Murphy, Paul O’Donohoe. Outhalves: Miah Nikora, Dan Parks, Craig Ronaldson. Centres:Eoin Griffin, Robbie Henshaw, Dave McSharry, Brian Murphy, Kyle Tonetti. Wingers: Fionn Carr, Matt Healy, Tiernan O’Halloran, Danie Poolman (special project). Fullbacks:James So’oialo (NIQ), Gavin Duffy.

While our squad is getting there in certain positions and we have a bigger squad, the question has to be asked have we as much depth as we'd like to think we do?

Front row: Hopefully the fringe players will push on next season but we look a bit short on depth & experience in all 3 positions given the injury issues we are certain to encounter.

2nd row: We're a bit stronger but we have to remember that Craig Clarke probably won't start any of the first 5 or 6 games (at least) and Swifty isn't getting any younger. Daniel Qualter has little experience and has it all to prove yet. Muldowney seems highly rated but we'll have to see.

Back row: Heenan looks a good bit of business but he still has little senior experience, Aaron Conneely's development looks to have stalled a bit, Fa'fita has it all to prove and we have lost JOC. Also John Muldoon isn't getting any younger. We are ok in theory but we could get stretched.

Scrum half: Marmion has come through well. After that I'd have little faith in any of the other options. Injury or an international callup could leave us in a bit of bother.

Out half: Parks isn't getting any younger and he'll mix the mainly good with the bad again I'd imagine. Nikora doesn't cut it for me. Has a couple of decent games from time to time but never commands the number 10 jersey. Ronaldson is worth a punt, he's done well at Landsdowne but he's playing in a dominant team at AIL so its a major step up.

Wings: I'm happy enough on the wings. I'd prefer to see Poolman at centre but we have good options with backup of a decent standard also. Hopefully Tiernan can push on next season.

Centre: Don't know will they reinstate Henshaw to his original position. We've had our injury problems. All our options there can do a job for us to some degree but McSharry being fit is critical and he looks likely to miss the early part of the season. Hopefully Tonetti will get a clear run also this season

Full Back: Don't know anything about So'oialo but reckon Pat Lam will give him the jersey having backed him to come over here. Gav is coming towards the end now as well.

You would hope that other options emerge from the academy as the season progresses. Shane Layden is a player who has huge potential but has had a tough time with injuries and you can only hope he can get a clean run and demonstrate his quality. Jack Carty needs to be viewing this season as an opportunity if he wants to make it. Darragh Leader, Ultan Dillane, Conor Finn etc. Don't know are these lads good enough to make it but there is always one or two who surprise you most seasons. You'd hope that Finlay Bealham, Jamie Dever and these lads can get plenty of Eagles gametime this season.

A couple of under the radar signings to the academy similar to previous signings like Dave McSharry, Mick Kearney, Kieran Marmion could be valuable in bolstering the squad.

ok but firstly that's not what we asked from a 2nd row, and secondly, he scores half of his points today, in 2013, which is good for us!

I have no doubt if he's fit enough to get back to rugby with Wegians next season that we'll see him line out with the Eagles in the B&I. He's 25 in July so he badly needs a full season of rugby behind him, losing two full seasons will have set him back massively development wise, there was no way they could take the risk of giving him a contract and him breaking down in September again. He has to go out and prove his body can take the rigors of adult competitive rugby...

I sincerely hope so. He has huge potential as a player so I hope he makes it.
