Mack Hansen's Hat-Trick Seals Record Irish Victory Over Australia
Aviva Stadium, Dublin – November 15, 2025
Ireland 46 | Australia 19
Ireland secured a record 46-19 victory over Australia at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, largely thanks to a phenomenal, hat-trick scoring performance from Mack Hansen. Making his first-ever Test start at full-back, the Connacht man delivered a Man of the Match display that saw him cross the try-line three times inside the first half-hour.
Hansen Torments Wallabies with First-Half Treble
Hansen wasted no time in making an impact against the Aussies. His first try came after just six minutes, following a quick-tap penalty that created space for him to dive under the posts. Just five minutes later, he repeated the feat with a "carbon copy" try after receiving a pass from Sam Prendergast following a scrum.
The hat-trick was completed in the 28th minute. Following a clever crossfield kick from Prendergast, the ball was spilled, and the quick-thinking Hansen was in the perfect position to scoop up the loose ball and score. This early scoring burst set the tone for the match, giving Ireland a commanding 19-7 lead.
Hansen’s selection at full-back was an instant success, as he returned from a recent foot injury and showed exceptional composure under the high ball and a constant attacking threat. Australia's former Ireland coach, Joe Schmidt, ruefully joked afterwards that Hansen was "probably the standout Australian player on the field."
Record Scoreline Confirms Irish Dominance
While Australia managed to score two converted tries through Len Ikitau and Fraser McReight to remain in contention at the half-time break, Ireland's forward dominance and continued attack secured a comprehensive victory. Further tries from Caelan Doris, Ryan Baird, and Robbie Henshaw in the final quarter secured the 46-19 final score, marking Ireland's largest-ever margin of victory over the Wallabies.
Post-match, Hansen was clear on his feelings after his memorable performance. "I missed being in this team," he said. "I know there’s a lot of chat about me not necessarily being born here and I didn’t grow up here, but I love this team and this feels like home."
Hansen's three tries, exceptional fielding, and Man of the Match award highlighted a performance that perfectly set Ireland up for their next match against the reigning world champions, South Africa.
