I saw Murray Kinsella tweeting about this tactic last weekend. He wrote at length about it almost a year ago, in a typically well put together piece: www.the42.ie/analysis-chiefs-super-rugby...ics-2013507-Mar2015/

I have to admit, it's not something that had ever occurred to me (having never really played rugby my understanding of some of the definitions wouldn't be 100% anyway), but it does seem like a clever tactic, and I'm surprised more teams haven't adopted it. It strikes me as being similar to the approach to a maul you often see whereby the defending team doesn't engage, and are therefore free to come around and tackle the ball carrier at the back.

From a Connacht persepctive, I could see Niyi racing up as he does at a restart, making a good tackle, and the rest of the lads swarming around to cause the opposition all sorts of trouble. Maybe Pat will read this and give it a go :-)

If you don't have time to read the article, here's a video that shows what it's all about:

They gave away a penalty in that video. Is that the correct video?

They did eventually, but the ref was happy with it initially I think. I read the article last week (no time to re-read now), but I seem to remember Murray pointing out a few examples and it seems the refs didn't seem too comfortable with it and had varying opinions on it.

We could do with a video explaining the offside law being played to the Clan Terrace before every game ;)
I once heard a lad shout for offside on a Friday night when there hadn't been a ruck since Tuesday.

This drives me insane. Me and my mates had to move from our usual spot last year cos of some spanner who always stood nearby and shouted it every few minutes. Clueless.

That's what I thought. My initial reaction was that the ref was fine with it but maybe he got a word in his ear to blow the whistle.
