Manchester Town Hall

Connacht travel to Greater Manchester to play Sale Sharks on October 20th at 15:00

Connacht are in search of a first cometitive win in England for nearly a decade. Could this be the one.

When: Saturday October 20th, 15:00
Where: AJ Bell Stadium, Salford.

Tickets

Tickets are available here. The Clan will be seated in sesction W03 so grab a ticket for there.

Getting there

Manchester is the obvious airport to go to, though some are going via East Midlands as you can fly direct from Knock. Birmingham is not too far away either by train. This one is doable as a day trip if you leave early.

Accommodation

Plenty of accommodation options in Manchester but it is fairly heavily booked on that weekend. There is no particularly popular location for the Clan, we are fairly scattered.

Hospitality

There was a suggestion to visit The Brook in Sale - right beside Brooklands station on the Metrolink tram line for anyone around on Friday night.

On Saturday, we can gather beforehand at Castle in the Air, which is near the Trafford Centre. There are free buses from there to the ground from 13.30 on, and there are various bars including the legendary Sharquee at the ground.

Match Day Transport

Sharks run shuttle buses from the Trafford Centre. You can get there by public transport from various locations.

Things to see

Plenty to see in Manchester. The Museum of Science and Industry is worth a look if you like industrial technology stuff and have a look at the Lowry if you like art.

Tram to Eccles is useless. Avoid if possible. We ubered from there and it still took 10 minutes.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

But if that single step is through Galway traffic, it may take 55 minutes, thus rendering the remainder of the thousand miles largely moot.

It seems that after successfully getting to Parma via Sicily and to Bayonne via two different Canary Islands, it was the traffic lights at the College Road/Lough Atalia junction that finally did for Pinky. In truth the adventure was over before I lost sight of the Clan Terrace.

But as long as there's blood in my veins, a boat in the harbour, and enough brine to float her, the cause is not yet lost.

On a related note, does anyone want to go for a pint in Dublin? I'm in Leopold's by Gate 109. But I'm willing to move. It seems to be closing for some reason ...

Two of us are arriving in Manchester Airport tonight at 9.30pm and going to get a taxi to the Trafford Centre to where we are staying. If anyone is on the same schedule and wants to share a taxi, let me know!

TBH just seeing the term "Sharquee" has me sold for life, even if Fosters is absolute urine.

Which should be plenty of time as it closes at 11.30. More pints somewhere closer to town afterwards could be an option for those who want to carry on later ..

Could be agood idea. Small group heading over we might get lost in the city.
What time is the last metrolink back ?

OK so it seems to be a no go on showing other games at the ground (like ourselves I suppose).
Also Castle in the Air being a Wetherspoon's won't be showing sport and by the time you'd get to the ground from anywhere else it wouldn't really be worth trying to watch the Munster game.
Might be able to get the second half of Racing v Ulster somewhere after the game. That's always the problem with going to rugby matches, you miss so much rugby :-)

For Friday, SSSC made a leftfield suggestion ;-) that we could actually go to Sale! The Brook is right beside Brooklands station on the Metrolink tram line so should be easy to get to. The boss is a Sharks fan so should be a good reception there. Should be able to get the Leicester Scarlets game on there too. Not sure I'd make it on Friday night as I'm arriving late, but if there's a crowd I'll give it a go.

Some matchday details attached. I also asked the ticket office about bringing bags in as I know a lot of people are heading to the airport after, etc. They said small backpacks will be no problem, they'll just be searched.

Sale Sharks Supporters' Club suggested the Castle in the Air for before the game. It's a Wetherspoon's near where the free shuttles leave from the Trafford Centre, so gets a decent crowd for that reason. Would doubt they have any sport on TV there though.

They don't have an official pub or a designated bar at the ground, but said they'd get back with some suggestions for Friday night.
I'm arriving late enough so could be 11 before I hit a pub but will wander somewhere for a pint if there's a crowd anywhere.

Don't think they'll be that strict with Connacht jerseys. I'd say as long as you're not sauntering about in a Liverpool jersey you'll be fine.

Myself and a mate are arriving at Manchester Piccadilly at noon and will probably go for drinks round the station as it doesn't seem there's one pub nominated as a Connacht hangout. Reading other forums there's not much near the AJ Bell Stadium so we'll stay central and probably get a taxi to the game.

I was in Manchester about 10 years ago.
All the pubs had a very strict clothes policy.

Had this changed?
That means no Jerseys
