Connacht travel to Newport to play the Dragons in the first away game of the season

A small Connacht Clan crew will be travelling over. Always room for a few more.

When: Friday September 16th, 19:30
Where: Rodney Parade, Newport

Tickets

Tickets are available online from the Dragons ticketing website. The Clan are booked into Hazell B, Row A, so grab a seat there or go for the Hazell terrace and base yourself in front.

Getting there

Flights to Cardiff are available with FlyBE, thought they depart very early.

Best option is to fly to Bristol. There are direct buses from Bristol Airport to Newport.

There is a flight from Knock with Ryanair on Friday, though none back on Saturday. You have to wait until Sunday to get back to Knock. There are a few on the Knock flight and some on the early Ryanair on Friday. A good few are returning on the Saturday afternoon Ryanair flight to Dublin. There are direct buses from the airport to Newport, though the times are not that convenient. You can get a shuttle to the train station and there are regular trains to Newport from there.

Accommodation

There are a few options in Newport, though a lot of the better hotels are on the outskirts of town. The Queen's Hotel is central and good value. The Travelodge is also cheap and well located.

Hospitality

The Lamb is owned by former captain Lewis Evans. We will gather there in the afternoon. The Pen and Wig is a good local pub. Urban Tap House in the City Market building has a great range of beers.

Things to see

The Newport Transporter Bridge is worth a look, if you're into weird bridges that seemed like a good idea at the time.

From Dragons:

Great to hear that some of you are heading to the game this Friday. It's quite a big game in terms of Community engagement. We are having a U14's tag tournament on the field just outside the stadium from 2 hours before kick-off. There will be 14 teams attending who will then form the guard of honour pre-match. If you're free, feel free to come over and watch.

I'm pretty sure they'll be doing it again on Friday, but after the match some of the players go back to the Lamb for a Q&A, just incase you weren't aware.

Plan is Wetherspoons for breakfast for those on the early flight and as soon as we get to Newport. Then possibly The Lamb for the afternoon up to leaving for the game.

for the sensible among us, there's shopping in Bristol (Cribbs Causeway) in the morning, then Newport in the early afternoon. Joining the others, then.

There are a dozen direct bus departures from Bristol Airport to Newport - and if there's one leaving shortly after your arrival, jump on it. If there's a sizable wait, then get the bus to Bristol Temple Meads where you can get a direct - and fast - train to Newport. Bizarrely, because of engineering works and the temporary closure the other main station in Bristol (Parkway) there are loads of extra trains on that weekend.

Someone might remember but I think a dragons player, owns or co-owns it

Yeah, Lewis Evans and another lad have it. Good spot. I think wp_rathead does karaoke there sometimes too ...

Pinky

Can you suggest a watering establishment where those of us arriving early could pass a few hours while we wait for the Knock passengers to arrive.

Timetable for dus from Bristol Airport to Bristol Train station (for shoppers) and Train then to Newport.

Return is from Newport to Bristol Airport with change at Bristol train station, but as nobody is likey to be shopping on way back I haven't split the times

Don't forget also there are direct buses from the airport to Newport with National Express. A little bit faster (55 mins) and I think cheaper, but less frequent so mightn't work out so well, e.g. for the 1635 departure on Saturday you'd have to leave Newport at 1335 and hang about at the airport for over 2 hours.

(and I might very well be shopping on the way back, but it'll be for a nice lunch, which may be solid or liquid, depending on circumstances)
