There were a few inquiries to the International Affairs Desk about this one so I stuck up some info (basically re-hashed from last year with a few updates).

I would imagine numbers will be low as it's the middle of a triple-bill of away trips with Brive the following weekend, but sometimes the sparsely attended ones are the best craic ...

the last trip in April was sparsely attended, but getting someone to the train, ruined the craic, for me

I'm tempted, but I'm going to Brive the weekend after, I've considered a day trip, but it's a bit of a rush, and pretty much requires a car rental, which wipes out the saving of no hotel

Staying the night, allows some time in Milan on the Sunday, Christmas Markets should be open in the area around the Doumo.

I am considering going to this match. Was thinking flying into Milan on Friday, stay in Milan, travel down to the match on Saturday morning, back to Milan Saturday evening, stay in Milan Saturday night and fly home on Sunday.
Has anybody done similar previously? is it a viable option?

it's doable, just to point out, there's 3 types of train service from Milano Centrale to Parma, first is the high-speed service, and the others are Intercity and regional, High speed costs more, and you'll be asked to leave if you have a intercity\regional ticket.

Italian trains website , in English, to check times, and online prices. We bought in the station, last trip, but give yourself an hour or so before departure to get the tickets . Queues can be mental. Staff are helpful though.
Online, Frecciabianca (high speed), maybe cheaper than regional trains if booking well in advance, and is 15 to 10 mins faster. There's no real benefit in booking regional train in advance, you won't save anything.
Sample return trip.
Leave Milano Centrale : 11:35, arrive Parma : 12:44
Leave Parma 20:10, arrive Milano Centrale : 21:25
High Speed train, super economy rate, 19.80€ per person return. That's a no refund, no change fare.
E-Ticket or collection in station option, and ticket machines do have an English language option.
