I started a page about this trip as I'm sure some people are in the advanced planning stage for it already.

Not much info as yet but if anyone has any useful tips, fire them up here ...

Chatting with prospective travellers, the general consensus is to fly into Jo'burg, over to Bloemfontein for the match and then head to Cape Town for a few days, as the better option for touring and sightseeing.
Flight searches give Turkish Airlines via Istanbul-
and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Abba
Round trip flights Dublin-Jo'burg returning Cape Town - Dublin are around €800

Might be an idea to talk to the local travel agent as they can advise best guidelines for flights and accommodation combined. (Pay a few euro more to take the hassle out of planning)

PASSPORT
www.home-affairs.gov.za/index.php/countr...exempt-from-sa-visas
Holders of an Irish Passport do not need a visa
The passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining from the intended date of departure
and passport must have one or two blank pages depending on which website you look at..

Best practice would be to CONTACT THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY to check

Hopefully some Clan forum users are South Africa veterans and are willing to talk!!

..... but when you’ve 9,000 crazy western people shouting at you,
it’ll give you that couple of percent that you need....John Muldoon

Fourdogs and the boss definitely going.
Route as Mahick suggested with 6 days in Capetown / Winelands
Just check to see if there is a 'partnership' between your international carrier into Johannesburg and your internal carrier. Same coming back from Capetown as you will probably be stopping in Johannesburg to pick up the International flight.
Not a big deal but having to collect your bags at the international terminal and then check in again at domestic can be a pain and time consuming.
We don't want another 'Stansted steeplechase'
Anyone want to volunteer to be Match Ticket co-ordinator to make sure we are all together for this one. It is a big stadium.

Can't wait for this one. Hopefully we'll get a nice travelling support for this trip. Will be an EPIC one....Something tells me that we can leave tickets until the last minute

Hey. They laughed at Louis Armstrong when he said he was gonna go to the moon. Now he’s up there, laughing at them.

as a spectator, I found the Stansted Steeple Chase immensely interesting.

Just mentioned it because the travel agent was adding the match tickets into our package.

Unlikely to go to this one, but from limited research I did in my humming and hawing phase, you can get a return DUB-JNB with KLM for something like €435. Cape town costs a bit more but Turkish Airlines will get you in to Johannesburg and out of Cape Town for less than €500.
Possible advantage of the KLM one is you can get a daytime flight on the way out so no trying to sleep in economy class.

I've created an account on the ticket system for Cheetahs.
Pricing for Cheetahs tickets is 80 Rand for Twizza Main Stadium, and 60R for the other seats. It seems no alcohol in Twizza area, so I'm guessing we'll be better in stand across from that, at 60R a seat.
We'd be better off checking with the branch, to see if they'll hand over some of their free tickets, or else, doing similar to Grenoble, and buying in bulk through the Clan.
In any case, at 3.85€ a ticket, we can do like you suggested and have 1 or two people purchase for the gang.

I don't think there's any benefit in the travel agent adding the tickets to the package.

That would be a disaster. Without alcohol there would be no good anecdotes for the sober people to bring home and tell. Repeatedly.

Just a warning for anyone taking an under 18 on any trip to SA. You MUST have an original birth cert at check in and at passport if both parents are travelling; and if only one, you must have the cert+ a notary signed by the non travelling parent. Child trafficking laws in SA. Almost caught out two years ago, I had to go home to get it, luckily I had time. Check with the airline.

I know it won't make a huge amount of difference (but if I go) I'm planning on heading to Cape Town first and returning from Johannesburg as its Autumn heading into Winter and the February temperatures are warmer than March.

The original statement on the Connacht website said that all matches in SA would be on a Saturday. Can anyone confirm this? I've just noticed Leinster play the Cheetahs on Friday night so that isn't the case!
In order to provide travelling teams to South Africa with the best possible preparation, games will be fixed for Saturdays. This will allow visiting teams to have a seven-day turnaround leading into these fixtures including five ‘clean days’ that do not involve any travel.

If any players are travelling on NZ passports, make sure they have applied for their visas. Don't want to do a Leinster....

Yeah, they appear to have abandoned that idea. They do seem to be sticking to the idea that teams have at least a seven day turnaround when switching continents though. Based on that if the Treviso game the weekend before is a Friday then Cheetahs could be a Friday too. Also give that the following weekend is free for the Six Nations, Sunday is an option. In fact a Sunday game might suit both teams.
