You can usually just buy them on the scottish rugby web site. Just register with them and they'll send reminders etc

The brother was texting me about his yesterday, he thinks you might need to buy Italy and at least one other game from the SRFU website

I went two years ago.
The process was very simple then. I registered with the SRFU, and then the tickets went on sale for members.
I bought two tickets, but the best I could get, was 2 seats, that were in the same row, but not beside each other.
Basically I got seat A and D, with two people sitting between us in B&C
Showed up on the day, and they were happy to move down a seat, so we got to sit together.

Definitely didnt need to pay for anything other than the one match.

As for flights, we got cheap flights in and out of Glasgow, and took the train to Edinburgh, and got a cheapish Ibis in Edinburgh for the night - Hotel was "Hotel ibis Styles Edinburgh Centre St Andrew Square"

From Scottish Rugby email I got

SIX NATIONS PACKAGES & SCOTLAND v ITALY TICKETS
ON SALE 10am TOMORROW, THURSDAY 22 NOVEMBER

Three-match packages covering all Scotland's home games in the 2019 Six Nations Championship go on sale at 10am tomorrow (Thursday 22 November) along with individual match tickets to the opening game against Italy.

Demand for Scotland tickets has been exceptionally high this season, with more Scotland Season Passes and Autumn Test Packages bought than ever before and requests from rugby club members higher than ever. To help satisfy the number of supporters who were unable to buy a Scotland Season Pass (it sold out in June) the initial release of these Six Nations tickets is via the three-match package. In addition, supporters can buy tickets for the opening game, against Italy on Saturday 2 February.

If there are any left, remaining seats for the games against Ireland and Wales will go on sale in early December. However, please note that because of the unprecedented demand for tickets this season, we cannot guarantee individual match tickets for these games will be available after the sale of Six Nations Packages.

What is the Six Nations Package?
The Six Nations Package covers all three Scotland home games in the 2019 Championship:

Scotland have selling out their games fairly consistently so there's a big demand for 6 nations games - even the italy game tends to sell out these days.

There's usually tickets to be had outside the ground though if you want to take a chance on it. There's some touts but generally there'll be lads trying to sell their spares for face value (and won't sell them to touts). It's the Roseburn side (where the tram stop is) that I've seen more guys selling tickets. You might get tickets on gumtree too ahead of the game, probably more than face value unless you leave it to the last minute

You can register on the SRU site for resale tickets that have been returned, you might be more likely to get those tickets if you have a uk phone number. You need to be available for a call from them on a certain date (obviously outlined when you register) and they will go through a list of people and call and offer them xyz tickets at face value. We did this a couple of years ago, can't imagine its changed too much.

There's tickets going on sale for the ireland game on Thursday at 10am on the SRU website. Not sure if you need to have registered in advance or not.

They sent out an email saying it's mainly single tickets but there'll be a few pairs side by side. Usually these are Cat A tickets so they'll be pricey.
